I recently bought a Wingnut Hyper 3 back pack to replace a very old Camelbak HAWG. I selected the Wingnut for two reasons 1) many reports of the comfort and 2) it is waterproof.
Despite its small looking size the Wingnut carries everything I really need. In addition to 3 litres of water it holds spare tube, pump, tool kit, trail tools, spare top, camera in padded case, money/phone etc, energy bars and a roll, OS explorer map and a 1 litre bottle of energy drink when required. The two side pockets are much more spacious than they look and the mesh pockets are a great idea. The main bag is a single compartment without any internal pockets or cubby holes and the water bladder sits behind this against the back panel. The fabric of the main bag and side pockets is a very lightweight rip-stop nylon-type stuff that is almost see through, it is however very tough and is unmarked despite a few tumbles. Both the fabric and zips are fully water proof and the contents in mine remained bone dry after a 30 minute ride in torrential rain. The shoulder and waist straps are made from a very soft but zero stretch plastic with large perforations, the buckles are the same as those used in Camelbaks. The back of the bag has sections that keep it raised from your body. A water bladder is not supplied with the bag.
The bag does feel odd when first worn as it sits very low, the bottom of the bag rests just above my hips. But, and a big but, it is incredibly comfortable and even when fully loaded at the beginning of an all day ride it feels half the weight of a Camelbak. The straps allow a cool air flow and because it sits so low sweaty back syndrome is a thing of the past.
I really like this bag and use it all the time, it is spacious very comfortable and waterproof, personally I couldn’t ask for more.
