Review: Joby GorillaPod

GorillaPod

GorillaPod

I carry  a camera with me on every ride and it is getting used more and more. A tripod helps keep the camera in position for filming but I wanted one that could easily be carried and used on the trail. The Joby GorillaPod seemed to fit the bill.

Even though I use a digital compact camera for stills and video, I chose the SLR version of the Gorillapod, just so the whole thing had plenty of beef to take trail knocks and wrap around trees etc.   The standard version is fine, I’m sure, for less rugged use but I’m glad I picked the tougher, larger version.

It’s basically a very Flexible tripod, designed for digital cameras weighing up to 1.75 pounds (800 grams).  It fits in your Camelbak easily and tends to “fold” best in a straight line for storage.  The segment design allows for secure and stable mounting pretty much anywhere.  The screw/base plate is a standard size and will fit all but the very rarest of camera – either compact or SLR.  This plate can stay connected to the camera for quicker set up and is not so obtrusive as to prevent stowing the camera in its usual case with it still attached.  It has a locking feature that gives added security to connect the camera to the tripod which is easily operated with gloved hands.  Folded flat it measures 25cm x 5cm x 5cm.

It’s a grippy, stable and versatile little piece of kit and well worth having if you are remotely interested in making trail videos etc. or taking macro stills to avoid the inevitable camera shake.

I got mine from Amazon for about £23 and prices range up to around £30.  The non-SLR version is much cheaper but the legs really aren’t long enough for maximum versatility in the woods!

It gets my seal of approval. 10/10
