Well, it has started.
The fanfare around the official launch of the South Downs National Park has been suprisingly quiet about one aspect of the newly anointed status…..parking fees.

A while ago we were asked to contribute to the South Downs section of a new publication…..We provided lots of photos for the South Downs area (including my favourite of Rob dP on p16) and some ideas for riding spots in our corner of the world.
Our post Xmas ride organised by Laura and Alex via the singletrack world forum went off without too many problems, at least for those who actually made it to the meeting point.
The roll time was upon us when my phone beeped. It was Brian reporting that Alex had slipped on snowy roots and tumbled, he couldn’t walk, his wife had bundled him into the car and they were on their way to A&E.
After witnessing this Brian decided that the trails were too slippery so he wimped it and headed back home. Continue reading
I was enjoying riding during the summer when in mid-August my desire and enthusiasm for anything mtb crashed through the floor. My mojo had gone.
It had been raining, not just your average rain, Amazon Forest style monsoon fill your boots kind of rain. Having only been on 3 rides with Brighton MTB before you could forgive me for staying at home, in the warm, just me, my belly and the telly. That seemed like a bit of a cop out. With a quick fix of yet another side wall ‘flint slice’ puncture and a last tweak of what is fast becoming a rear derailleur nightmare, I chucked the bike on the back of the car and headed off for the Thursday night ride. Last month I decided to enter a DH race as well as a suitable bike I also needed some protective gear.
The local Specialized guys kindly let me use a 140mm travel Pitch for the weekend. It was a relief not to have to do it on my trusty Giant Yukon, I think it would’ve fallen apart after about 10 seconds! I did actually buy some fake protective gear stuff – well since it’s only plastic I decided it doesn’t really matter if it’s not the genuine article. And it looks pretty realistic for the price, I got knee & shin pads, Fox-branded body armour jacket and dh gloves for a combined total of about 30 quid – not bad! It was really hot and stuffy during the race weekend though so rather than wearing the jacket I just borrowed some elbow/forearm pads instead – which turned out to be a bad decision..!
Due to family commitments we hadn’t planned a ride for the bank holiday weekend but at on Saturday a note arrived and a day of fun linking up some new singletrack that a couple of the gang have been busy with was on the agenda.
A fine day out with plenty 0f fun, spills and punctures. Continue reading
The recent warm weather has resulted in lovely dry trails and our recent evening rides have included plenty of sections that during the mud season we didn’t have time to fit in. Thursday evening’s pace is not too quick, a relaxed trundle on the fire-roads followed by a blat along the singletrack, with plenty of rests for ‘Tangfastic’ comsumption. Regular Eleanor made this weeks ride on ‘The Beast’ her 39.5lbs singlespeed downhill hardtail - respect.
To the folks who have recently contacted us asking about the rides as the advert says ‘just do it’.
There are no fees, no formalities and very little organisation. Most newcomers quickly become regulars, others come along when they can and some ride with us once and are not seen again!
